CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange)
CME (Chicago Mercantile Exchange) is the largest futures and options exchange in the United States. It offers a very wide range of products, including currencies, energy, agricultural products, metals, interest rates and stock indices. CME has 4 sub-exchanges: NYMEX, COMEX and CBOT. Some high-volume products from each sub-exchange are illustrated below. Trading on CME takes place online worldwide.
- CME: Currencies (EUR/USD and other major pairs), indices (Dow, Nasdaq, S&P 500, Russell, Nikkei), etc.
- COMEX: Precious metals (Gold, Silver) and industrial metals (Copper, Aluminum), etc.
- NYMEX: Energy products (Crude oil, Natural gas, Gasoline, Diesel), Platinum, Palladium, etc.
- CBOT: Agricultural products (Wheat, Corn, Soybean), US government bonds and interest rate products, etc.
LME (London Metal Exchange)
Founded in 1877, the London Metal Exchange ("LME") is the world's largest metal exchange. A large part of the global metal industry uses the LME to hedge its costs. Acquired by Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Limited in December 2012, the LME is an active market in metals with a history of over 130 years.
10 metals are traded on the LME, including Aluminum, Copper, Zinc, Nickel, Lead and Tin. The exchange's average daily trading volume exceeds 650,000 lots (Q1 2025 average). The two most actively traded metals are generally aluminum and copper.
Unlike other derivatives exchanges, the LME opens a separate contract for each day instead of monthly and quarterly contracts. This feature makes it more similar to a Forward market than a Futures market. The most active contract is the 3-month contract, traded with a value date 3 months after the trade date. Dates other than the active 3-month maturity are referred to as broken dates. Electronic trading is available between 01:00 and 19:00 London time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are futures (futures contracts)?
A Futures contract obligates the holder to buy or sell a commodity, precious metal, financial indicator, capital market instrument or currency of a predetermined price, quantity and quality on a specific maturity date. Futures contracts also specify details such as the quality and quantity of the product. They are traded on markets that operate according to specific rules and standards (organized markets, exchanges), and the party buying or selling these contracts assumes the obligations specified in the contract.
Which contracts are available?
There are four types of futures contracts, for which a certain amount of margin must be deposited in order to trade:
- Commodity futures contracts
- FX futures contracts
- Interest rate futures contracts
- Stock index futures contracts
Why futures?
Futures markets are organized markets. Investors can invest directly at exchange prices in the product of their choice. Investors benefit from the advantage of trading at low commission rates in international futures markets. There is the opportunity to trade in a very wide range of products, from metals to oil, and from agricultural products to currency pairs.
Why should you trade futures with PhillipCapital?
- Fast execution and low commission opportunity,
- Instant trading on any exchange and product, from anywhere you're online, with the CQG M Platform,
- The opportunity to invest in a wide variety of contracts such as commodities, precious metals, stock indices and currency pairs,
- The use of different order types such as Limit, Market, Stop, Stop-Limit – OCO (Order-Cancels-Order),
- Support from experienced client representatives.
Is physical delivery available?
Our institution does not carry out physical delivery of the financial products underlying futures contracts. At or before maturity, positions are closed on the client's behalf through cash settlement.
How much margin is required, and what are the maintenance margin and stop-out level?
The amount of collateral set aside to trade contracts is called margin. Margin is determined separately by the exchanges for each asset traded. A Margin Call occurs at the end of the day when total assets fall below the maintenance margin. Accounts remaining in margin call at the end of the day are notified by email. An account in margin call must exit margin call within two days by sending new funds or closing positions. For accounts that remain in Margin Call at the end of the second day, the brokerage closes positions until the account rises above the Margin Call level. If, at any time, a client's total assets fall to 35 percent of the initial margin, all positions are closed by the institution (stop out).
Are there any restrictions on scalping/hedging?
There is no such restriction at PhillipCapital. You can trade freely in your own account.
Where can I download your demo platform?
If you submit an application through our website, our representatives will share your username and password with you.
Can I follow the market and trade from my mobile phone?
Our web-based CQG M platform is suitable for use on mobile platforms. You can trade from your mobile phone and tablet, and follow the market continuously at any time. For the application to run properly, the minimum system requirements are Android v4.1.2 and above, or iOS 7 and above.
Can I place orders by phone for my futures trades?
Orders by phone are accepted for your futures transactions.
How long can I hold an open position?
You can hold your open positions until the contract's maturity, as long as your margin allows.
Are there differences between demo account and live account conditions?
Because Futures Markets are organized markets, trading takes place at real-time exchange prices. Prices are live. Some contracts available in a Live Account may not be available when using a Demo Account.
How can I open a futures account?
To open an account, our agreements must be signed and other documents appropriate to the type of account being opened must be submitted to us. The account is opened once the documents are found to be complete. After the account is opened, we send you an email containing your account details and bank transfer information.
