What commission rate and other costs apply to international equity purchases and sales?
For an online purchase through the Internet Branch or trading platform:
When buying stocks on the US exchange, only a $0.99 commission will be charged, regardless of the current or nominal value of the stock purchased, plus the Banking and Insurance Transaction Tax, totaling a $1.04 commission.
This commission is applied per order. In other words, whether a single order is for $100 or $500,000, the transaction cost will be the same and fixed.
Two types of additional taxes and fees apply when selling a stock on the US exchange:
- SEC Fee: Applied by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), at a rate of 20.6 per million of the current sale value as of 2 April 2026.
- Trading Activity Fee: Charged at a rate of 0.000195 (195 per million) per share sold. Applied with a minimum of $0.01 and a maximum of $9.79. Independent of the current value of the stock sold.
Detailed information about the Trading Activity Fee (FINRA FAQ)
Accordingly, in addition to the $0.99 commission on sell transactions, related costs arise depending on the number of shares sold and the trade volume.
Example:

What is an ADR? (American Depositary Receipts)
American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) are securities listed on US exchanges that represent ownership of shares in companies incorporated outside the United States. ADRs are issued by US banks as USD-denominated certificates representing foreign shares, and can be bought and sold on US securities exchanges. The receipts issued against the deposited shares trade on exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. Investors can diversify their portfolios through ADRs; additional costs such as service/custody or tax fees are charged to the account on a quarterly or annual basis.
What advantages do ADRs offer investors?
ADRs enable shares of companies incorporated outside the US to be traded on US exchanges in US Dollars. The banks issuing ADRs are subject to regular oversight by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Investors can diversify their portfolios and use ADRs as a relative hedge against political, currency and inflation risks.
What are the potential risks of ADRs for investors?
Investors who invest in ADRs are charged quarterly or annual ADR custody or pass-through fees. The issuing US banks may terminate ADRs for certain reasons; in this case the position may be liquidated or converted into another investment. Some ADRs have low liquidity, and not every company has an ADR.
